Concerns over destruction of monuments in Badakhshan

Some cultural activists in Badakhshan claim that most monuments are facing the risk of destruction and if no one pays attention they will be destroyed.

Officials in Information and Culture Department of Badakhshan also say that some monuments in the province need to be refurbished and this department has made strives in this regard.

Sayed Hussain Nahib, Arts and Culture Director at Information and Culture Department of Badakhshan tells that some monuments, with the help of Aga Khan Foundation’s cultural section, have been refurbished in recent years but some others still need to be repaired and if no attention is paid to them, they will demolish.

Mr. Nahib states that the main danger that threatens monuments is natural disasters, which cause them to crumble and lose their archeological values.

Mr. Nahib adds that they have sent official letters to Aga Khan Foundation and Urban Development Department to cooperate with them in refurbishing monuments.

21 monuments have been officially recorded in Badakhshan so far, 4 of which have been refurbished by cultural section of Aga Khan Foundation and others still need to be refurbished.
